I opened several figures, like star, and I do not know what that means. What is the difference between the star and is it normal?

As you play the character and win medals and trophies, climb the ranks, winning mini-games, etc., have a star next to that character. This means that the character is now capable of things and their skills are now at a higher level, so that the character faster or stronger, etc., etc.
(Faster, Stronger, normal, etc.)
This is probably something that you unlock, which comes with the character. In Mario Kart Wii, I opened and someone came up with a star that will help you go faster.
